May 8 – Along, not Alone

George Young was an obscure preacher and carpenter in the 19th century.  He and his wife were poor and worked in rural churches, never receiving much pay.  He never had much financially but promised to build his wife a house one day.  After years of meager savings, he finally had enough money to build a house by his own hands.

      Their joy seemed complete. But then, while Young was away holding meetings in another area, some thugs who disliked the preacher’s Gospel message set fire to the house, leaving nothing but a heap of ashes. It is thought that out of that tragic experience, George Young completed this hymn, which reaffirms so well the words of Job 35:10: “God my Maker, who gives songs in the night.” It’s good to know that when we experience trouble God doesn’t “leave us alone” but rather He “leads us along.”

Though sorrows befall us and Satan oppose,
God leads His dear children along;
Through grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes,
God leads His dear children along.

Some through the waters, some through the flood,

Some through the fire, but all through the blood;

Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,

In the night season and all the day long.
