May 29 – Tombstone Testimony

In his book, Heaven, Randy Alcorn tells of an Indiana cemetery with a tombstone over one hundred years old.  It reads:

Pause stranger, when you pass me by: as you are now, so once was I.

As I am now, so you will be. So prepare for death and follow me.

Someone later engraved these words on the tombstone:

To follow you I’m not content, until I know which way you went.

Such humor has a sobering reality: we should be careful whom we follow, especially when it relates to our eternal destiny. Follow the wrong driver and you get to the wrong city.  Follow the wrong role model and you get to the wrong character.  Follow the wrong teacher and you get to the wrong conclusion, but follow the wrong leader, and you may find yourself on the wrong side of eternity.

If you are leader, use your influence to help others understand the importance of preparing not only for this life, but for the one to come.  This is especially true for parents.  Our children typically follow in our spiritual steps.  Will your path lead them to heaven?  The words on your tombstone never speak as loudly as the words of your testimony.  Take steps toward eternity every day, and be sure to take others with you.
