May 17 – Who Will You Serve?

If we only serve those who are “deserving” of our labor we will not  be very busy.  Some only want to posture before presidents, pastors, politicians, and the prestigious.  But Jesus took filthy feet into His holy hands and washed the feet of soiled men. This is an uncomfortable gesture for most of us. If Christ condescended to such an estate, perhaps He expects the same out of His followers.

Are you willing to touch the brow of the leper?  Are you willing to bow before the broken?  Will you eat with the homeless or embrace the orphan?  These questions leave us in a spiritual quandary.  If we say “yes” then we must remember the last time it happened.  If we say “no” then we confess that we are unwilling to do for others what Christ was willing to do for us.

The value of our service is measured by the type of people we are willing to touch.  When we fail to assume the position of a servant we work from the premise that we are better than Christ. You see, those disciples were sinners, they were soiled, but they were His. The towel was not just a religious garment to wear, it was an instrument of grace used to wash the feet of those who needed pardon.  Touch someone with your towel, and you will touch the very heart of God.
