It was a pretty bold statement, “Lord, I will follow thee, whithersoever thou goest” (Luke 9:57). It almost sounded poetic in nature. Reminiscent of Ruth’s declaration to Naomi (I will go wherever you go, I will stay wherever you stay, etc.), this man was seemingly pledging his allegiance to Christ. This all sounds great until Jesus sheds some light about His poverty. The Lord replied, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”
“Whithersoever? Wherever? Well, I have to tell you that I do not have a home.” Those were pretty much the words of Christ. Jesus wanted this fellow to know that in order to be a genuine disciple, he would have to leave the luxuries and comforts of this life and be willing to live as a pilgrim in this world.
Do you follow Christ “whithersoever?” Does your cross show up in every venue of your life, or do you leave it behind in certain places? Sure, it is assumed we take the cross with us to church and perhaps religious gatherings, but what about our jobs, our social outings, our homes? The Lord is not looking for part-time cross-bearers who will only go to certain places. He is looking for those who are willing to depart from this world and follow Him-wherever that may be.
