“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10
Standing in the kitchen one night contemplating what to cook for dinner, I noticed a bag of peanuts on the counter. I thought to myself that we as a family are very careful not to eat peanuts, or anything with nuts, on Sundays and Wednesdays because of those in our church that are allergic. We know the dangers of peanut allergies and we are careful not to put anyone in harm’s way. We would never want to be the reason they had a potentially life threatening allergic reaction. But God quickly convicted me, “What do you do to make sure you aren’t harming them spiritually?”
It is hard to swallow the idea that my thoughts and actions could be the very thing that is keeping revival from breaking out. It is difficult to accept that my lack of prayer or my indulgence in sin could be the main reason that someone else may never come to know Christ. How clean is my heart? How pure are my thoughts? Is my walk right with God? When is the last time I truly prepared my heart for service? All of these answers could be the “nut” that causes someone else’s allergic reaction.
I would never eat peanuts before church to ensure that no one was potentially harmed, but what do I do about my heart? “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).
