“The first point of wisdom is to discern that which is false; the second, to know that which is true.” – Lucius Lactantius
A young politician eagerly took the platform to address his audience. When he walked upon the stage there was no one in the stands but an older farmer. The young politician asked, “Do you think I should give my scheduled speech or just dismiss the meeting?” The gentleman replied, “Sir, I am a cowhand and I don’t know much. But I do know if I took a load of hay to the pasture and only one cow showed up, I would still feed it.”
The politician stood before the man and delivered his scheduled speech about the pressing issues of the day. Afterwards the politician asked how he did. The cowhand replied once again, “Sir, I am just a cowhand and I don’t know much. But I do know if I took a load of hay to the pasture and only one cow showed up, I wouldn’t dump the entire load on him.”
One thing the politician was missing was a discerning spirit. Abraham Lincoln said, “Discernment is the simple ability of knowing how to assess a circumstance and then following through with the appropriate response.” As believers, we need discernment in every area of life. From raising our children to balancing our budget, we need the direction and leadership of the Holy Spirit. He is our Teacher and Guide. Ask the Lord to give you greater discernment in your life, and be sensitive to the Spirit’s direction.
