November 9 – Big-Picture Living

Big-Picture Living

“The future belongs to those who see the possibilities before they become obvious.” – John Sculley

A journalist sporadically interviewed a few day-laborers as they poured concrete on a construction project.  When asked what he was doing the first worker grumbled and flippantly said, “I am earning a measly paycheck.”  The second worker, when asked the same question simply said, “I am pouring concrete, what does it look like I am doing?”  The third worker, whistling and smiling, eagerly replied, “I am building a beautiful shelter for the homeless.  I am fortunate enough to be part of something that will help people for years down the road.”

Initially it may have seemed like these men were all doing the same thing; but in reality, they were all doing something very different.  Their vision affected their attitude concerning the activities of their lives.

E. Paul Hovey said, “A blind man’s world is bound by the limits of his touch; an ignorant man’s world by the limits of his knowledge; a great man’s world by the limits of his vision.” Ultimately what you are doing in life is determined by your ability to see the greater picture.  For some people, all they do is “earn a paycheck” or “pour concrete.”  But to those who are willing to live for a greater cause they have “big picture” vision, and therefore make a “big picture” difference.
