Don’t Focus on Falling

“Adversity causes some men to break, others to break records.” –William Arthur Ward

It was the 1993 Super Bowl Game.  Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson was giving his team the pre-game pep-talk before they took the field.  With clarity and resolve, he gave them the following scenario:

“If I laid a two-by-four across the room, everybody here could walk across it and not fall, because your focus would be on walking that two-by-four. But if I put that same two-by-four ten stories high between two buildings, only a few would make it, because the focus would be on falling.”

When we focus on falling there is a greater chance that we will fall; but when we take that same concentration and resolve our hearts to stay grounded we will be more likely to endure anything that comes our way. It was only when Simon Peter concentrated on falling that he actually fell.  When his eyes were on Christ, he was able to endure the storm and walk on the water.

The Cowboys won that year in staggering fashion by concentrating on the right things.  Looking at what matters most will help you stay upright in light of those things that matter least.
