September 7 – A Long Life or a Full Life

A Long Life or a Full Life

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” –Jim Elliot

Jim Elliot, missionary to Ecuador, immediately felt the call of God after graduating college.  In an attempt to spread the Gospel, he and four other missionaries dedicated their lives in the deep jungles of the country.  He was burdened for the Waodani people of the region; but ten warriors of the very region he had been called to rose in malfeasance and murdered Elliot and those who were with him.

Elliot’s body was discovered downstream, but his journal was recovered not long after his death.  In one of his entries he recorded, “I seek not a long life, but a full one, like you, Lord Jesus.”

The life of Jesus Christ was only a brief thirty-three years, but consider the global, cultural, religious, and spiritual impact He made.  His influence is still being felt around the world and in the hearts of men because He sought to live a life of purpose, meaning, and sacrifice.

Do you seek to life a long life or a full life?  Someone has rightly stated, “We shouldn’t count our days; we should make our days count.”  The length of your life is not as important as the depth of your life.  We place a lot of emphasis on living long, but do we live wide?  Some may contend that the life of Jim Elliot was a waste, but Jim Elliot would contend that his life was a success because he lived fully in God’s grace.
