Christ Tore Down the Wall

“For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.” –Ephesians 2:14

In 1987, President Ronald Reagan gave a historic speech in Berlin, Germany, aimed at then Soviet Union Leader Mikhail Gorbachev, demanding him to “tear down this wall.” Of course, Reagan was speaking of the infamous wall that separated eastern and western Europe – The Berlin Wall.

The wall was an iconic barrier dividing, not only Europe, but the entire world.  It separated the west, with its capitalistic, industrial, Christian philosophies from the east, with all its communistic, dictatorial, atheistic philosophies.  The wall separated land, languages, family, friends, culture, religion, politics, and world-views.  Two years after Reagan’s speech, both sides were globally televised tearing down the wall.  The demolition of the Berlin Wall was a symbolic end to the Cold War between the east and west.

Christ, in His death on the cross did the same thing for those who believe.  Ephesians 2:14 states, “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.”  In Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female.  In Christ, we are one body! The wall that separated Jew and Gentile has been destroyed, and we have been granted citizenship in the city of God.
