“I need God more than anything I can get from God.” –Philip Yancey
There is great consolation in knowing that God hears the most faintest whispers of the soul; perhaps there is even greater consolation in knowing that this very God also whispers to the soul.
Jesus said, “What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops” (Matthew 10:27). What grand and glorious suggestion is given here in this verse: Jesus speaks in the dark and He speaks in secret (in the ear).
Who, but God, can find us in the darkest hour? Who, but God, can speak in the secret places? Elijah knew the whisper of God when he stood in the dark, secret cave of despair. It was in that place that God spoke with a still small voice. The prophet was not disturbed by the wind, the earthquake, or the fire…it was the still, small voice that rocked his soul. It was the whisper from another world that captured his heart’s attention and launched him out of that cave to continue his work and ministry.
Beloved, I submit to you, that God whispers. And when He does, it will deafen, with divine magnitude, the tones and timbres of this world. Come to the edge of the cave, drown out the unpleasant noises of life, and listen closely for the sovereign whispers of God.
