A Name Above Every Name

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say.”    –The Lord Jesus Christ

God the Father glorified God the Son by giving Him a name that is above every name. Christ, in humiliation, came to this earth to do the Father’s will. Crying out, “It is finished,” on the cross confirmed that the plan had been accomplished and Christ would soon rise from the grave.  Through His humility, God bestowed honor, and as Paul declared, “Hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

When Paul said that Jesus Christ is Lord, we must understand that He is exalted above all. He is Master, Ruler, Sovereign. The name “Jesus” was a common name, a derivative of Joshua which means “Jehovah saves.”  The word “Christ” was the title of the Messiah which spoke of His anointing and position.  But the idea of Him being the Lord Jesus Christ declares His supremacy over all.  And this is the name that everyone will confess, “that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Everyone will call Him Lord, this is certain. Some will call Him Lord by choice, others by force. Either way, the totality of mankind will, in grand design, acknowledge the Creator and declare Him to be that which was given Him by His Father: Lord of all!
