June 10 – The God of Truth

The God of Truth

“God keeps His promises, not simply because it’s honorable, but because His holiness doesn’t contain the ability to perform anything less than perfection.” –Emily Ertley

God is not a man that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should repent: Hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” Numbers 23:19

There are many different names for God in the Bible, but the name of God that Numbers 23:19 is referring to is “El Emet” God of Truth. In Psalm 31, David senses that he is surrounded by men who plot his death and who corrupt his name and testimony with “lying vanities.” But David says to God, “Into thine hand I commit my spirit: Thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of Truth [Jehovah El Emet].”

One of the many reasons we turn to God when our environment is shaken is because He is the God of Truth – faithfulness, reliability, trustworthiness. David knew what it was like to have nobody else to turn to or trust in, other than God. I believe it took those hard times for David to truly understand what a comfort El Emet was. I believe his deeper trust in El Emet is what led David to refer to God as his “strong rock” and “fortress,” in verses 2 and 3. The God of Truth NEVER let him down. The God of truth is the strongest foundation and the sturdiest walls that any man could secure himself with.
