April 23 – Are You Looking for a Sign?

bible, book, girl

“A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall be no sign given unto it.” –Jesus Christ

Have you ever spoken to someone who was looking for a “sign” in their life?  I have. I have had conversations with well-meaning Christians who believe if they just had a “sign” they would be able to make critical decisions.  They look for a “sign” to point them in a specific direction.  They say a “sign” is all they need. A falling star, a deer in the pasture, a red light suddenly turning green…and in it all, they discover the will of God?

Most of the signs I have encountered in life only point me to the actual thing I am longing for.  A sign on the highway may point me to the restaurant of my liking, but the sign itself cannot serve me a meal.  A sign may direct me to a favorite vacation spot, but the sign does not facilitate rest and relaxation.

In his book, Awe, Paul Tripp states, “Every awesome thing in creation is designed to point you to the One Who alone is worthy of capturing and controlling the awe of your searching and hungry heart.”  New Testament followers of Christ are like the Magi of old – they have found His star.  But the star is only given to bring us to the reality of the Savior.

Don’t guide your life by every falling star of the night; rather, chart your course by the Bright and Morning Star. He’s all you need.
