Deceptive Articulation

“Parts and parcels of truth are the most envenomed shafts which fly from the bow of Satan.” –William Howells

In 1866, Thomas Carlyle was speaking at the distinguished University of Edinburgh and made this sobering statement to the audience, “Can there be a more horrible object in existence than an eloquent man not speaking the truth?”

Perhaps nothing is more damning to the soul than the sweetened nectar of Satan’s cocktails.  Half-truths, falsehoods, lies, and deceptions are often packaged in the beautiful wrappings of articulation.  Satan smoothly and gingerly spoke words of death to our first parents. Adam and Eve were so ensconced by the slick presentation of the serpent, that they failed to notice his reptilian hands around their throats.

Be cautious of the man who can paint before you a canvas of lies.  It is possible to become so mesmerized with his colors, his lines, and his façade that you see yourself in his portrait.  Paul said, “…let God be true, but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4).

Measure all things, everything, by the purity of God’s Word.  No matter how fanciful, beautiful, or articulate a lie may sound – it is still a lie.  “Can there by a more horrible object in existence than an eloquent man not speaking the truth?” asked Carlyle.  Perhaps: a man that believes him.
