March 15 – Salvation by Faith Alone

Salvation by Faith Alone

The apostle Paul adamantly pronounced and lived his life by this statement, “For by grace are ye saved through faith.” All of Scripture validates this truth, but have you ever wondered why it is by faith?  Why not love, compassion, righteousness, or deeds?

God saves us by faith because it is the complete anti-work.  Faith requires nothing of our hands.  It is only through faith that God justifies His own holiness.  Had we been able to do something to merit our righteousness, God would be excluded from the equation of salvation.

Faith leaves everything to God.  Faith allows us to rest from our unrelenting and unsuccessful pursuit of eternal life, and causes us to look to Christ.  Only by faith can we see Jesus, Who is the Author and Finisher of the very subject.   As Andrew Murray said, “Faith expects from God what is beyond all expectation.”

Trying to approach God with anything other than faith is sin.  The essence of sin is us trying to substitute good works for salvation, while the essence of salvation is God substituting Himself for us.

Therefore, we do good works not to be accepted of Christ but rather to be pleasing unto Christ.  The just shall live by faith, and what makes us “just” is the very faith by which we live.
