December 22 – The Prince of Peace

Isaiah prophesied that Messiah would come.  In his prophecy, he pronounced, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Oh, how the world longed to know peace.  That sacred union that kept man’s soul in communion with Holy God was severed in Paradise’s garden.  From the fall of man, peace was a lost notion.  Religion, empires, morality, tabernacles, wealth, assets, and the like were futile replacements for peace. None of these things could cure the deep longing and haunting void of man’s soul.  But what a word, what a promise, what a glory foretold that the messianic child to be born would bear the title of Prince of Peace!

Is this not what the angels promised when Christ was born? “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men” (Luke 2:14).  Jesus bore the title of the Prince of Peace because that is what He offers all men.  You and I can have peace with God through justification in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1).
