December 16 – The Lamb of God

When John the Baptist pronounced Christ as the Lamb of God, he was merely announcing a reality that had been determined long before John ever came upon the scene.  The Bible says, “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8).   Peter said that we were redeemed by the precious blood of Christ “who verily was ordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you” (1 Peter 1:20).

Christ, as the Lamb, pictures the predetermined plan of God to atone for the sins of man.  The truth is, before there was a need for a sacrifice, before there was sin, there was a Lamb. God knew what it would take to forgive mankind of their sins.  He knew the cost involved would be the blood of His Son.

Christ, therefore, entered into that Holy Place, not only as the High Priest, but also as the Lamb Who atoned for sins.  His sacrifice was eternally sufficient because it was with His own spotless, pure, holy, and righteous blood that God forgave us.  This sovereign plan of God, therefore, is as secure as the eternality of Christ.  Before time ever began, Christ had already secured our atonement as the Lamb slain!
