December 14 – The Son of David

As the Son of God, we see Christ in His deity.  As the Son of man, we see Christ in His humility and humanity.  As the Son of David, we see Christ in His sovereignty. The promised Messiah was to come through the lineage of David, and would sit upon the throne of Israel forever.

King David was not permitted by God to build the holy temple; however, God did promise Him that a Son would come and not only build the house, but would sit upon the throne in Israel (2 Samuel 7).  Solomon, in the immediate fulfillment of that promise, did rise up, as David’s son, and occupy the throne as king.  However, he did not possess that position forever.  Solomon died with the world still anticipating One to come who would forgive them of their sins.

Christ, as the offspring of David and the bright and morning star, came from the lineage of the great King and will one day establish His throne in Jerusalem forever.  One day, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.  One day, all the inhabitants of heaven and earth will acknowledge Him for Who He is – the King of kings and the Lord of lords.  He is the sovereign ruler of all mankind; He is the Son of God, the Son of man, the Son of David.
