In Psalms 7:17, the psalmist made this declaration, “I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.” This passage is not only a personal expression of praise from a thankful writer, this is also a revelation of the glorious name of God.
“The LORD most high” is Jehovah-Elyon. When Isaiah saw the Lord in Isaiah 6, he saw the Lord high and lifted up, sitting upon a throne. When the disciples saw the transfiguration of the Son of God, they saw Him in a pure-white glory exalted above Moses the great lawgiver and Elijah the powerful prophet. God, as Jehovah-Elyon reminds us that He is not only before all, and beyond all, but He is above all. He is most high.
His throne, His kingdom, His heaven, His glory, His city, His power is most high. His wisdom, His nature, His love, His grace, His holiness is most high. There is no name like the name of our God. There is no power like the power of our God. As Jehovah-Elyon we see Him rise above His enemies. We see the earth as His foot-stool. And when we see Him in such a position, and know Him in such a manner, it will cause us to do as David did–sing praises unto His name!
