The writer of Hebrews gave a challenging admonition in chapter four, “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession” (Hebrews 4:14).  We are called to hold fast our profession; but what does that mean? To “hold fast” means to strongly grasp or clutch.  The word “profession” is simply a confessed acknowledgment.  So when the writer says, to hold fast our profession, he is encouraging us to stay strong in our testimony and witness for Christ.  In context of the chapter, he is referring to the Word of God (v12), especially as it relates to the gospel (v2).

How can we really “hold fast” in a world that stands in continual opposition to the believer?  The answer to that question is discovered in the same verse, “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.”  Our ability to spread the Good News of Christ on earth is secured and validated by the position and power of Christ in heaven.  As a Priest He stands between us and God; as His followers we are to stand for Him before the unsaved, proclaiming His eternal glory.
