In the book of Jeremiah, the Lord rebukes His people by describing their inability and unwillingness to hear His Word. He said, “To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the Word of the Lord us unto them a reproach; that they have no delight in it” (Jeremiah 6:10).
The Jews took great pride in the circumcision of their flesh. It was their boast, their blessing, and the sign of their benefits among those in Palestine. To be uncircumcised was to be an outcast, a foreigner, an alien to the privileges and promises of God. However, in the days of Jeremiah, God reprimanded His people because their ears would not and could not hear His Word.
It is possible to be religious and disobedient. It is possible to be a church member and rebellious. It is possible to sit among the preaching of the Word of God and never actually hear it. Those with uncircumcised ears never allow God’s Word to infiltrate their hearts. It’s not that the Word goes in one ear and out the other. No, it’s that it never goes in at all. May God give us ears to hear His Word, and hearts to obey it.
