“The greatest waste in the world is the difference between what we are and what we could become”– Ben Herbster
Every year millions of dollars are unclaimed through unused gift cards. It is said even if the card is used there is oftentimes a small percentage that is left on the balance. This proves to be a gain for department stores and businesses, but a loss for consumers. Recently I came across a few gifts cards people have given me over the past year. Several of them had a few dollars or a few cents left on them. Even though this seems like an insignificant amount- it does add up if given enough cards.
These unused gift cards resemble our potential. Someone has accurately stated, “Many people often reach their goals, but few people rarely reach their potential.” Too many people are like these cards- they never give all they have- they always leave a little leftover.
It is easy to set goals and reach those goals; but just because you reach a goal doesn’t necessary mean you have reached your potential. Calvin Coolidge said, “The most common commodity of this country is unrealized potential.” I certainly do not want to get to the end of my life and realize I did not give everything I could have given. Give all your love, all your time, and all your effort. Our gifts, talents, and abilities benefit no one if left unused.
