“Where you are headed is more important than how fast you are going.”–Stephen Covey
There was a large pine tree leaning precariously near my home so I decided to bring it down. After the chain saw had done its work and the tree was on the ground I was able to have a clear view of the rings and make an accurate estimation of the age of the tree. I counted over fifty rings but something interesting stood out. The first twelve years of this tree’s life represented nearly half of its size! After the twelfth year, growth slowed to a rate that would have been barely noticeable to anyone passing by. It was growing slow but it was healthy, mature, and definitely growing.
For the majority of Christians, we experience an initial stage of growth and development that runs at an explosive rate. As we begin to arrive at the beginning stages of maturity this rate diminishes greatly. If we aren’t careful we will get bored and even lazy but it is essential that we continue to move forward. A lot is happening that we can’t see and it’s happening at a rate that gets us a lot less attention. As years pass, though, this slow growth adds up to a level of strength and stability that can handle about any weather that we may face. You may not feel very different than you did this time last year but growth happened. The rings of growth may be slim and close together but I promise they are there! Don’t quit now! Keep growing!
