“The greatest gift you can give another is the purity of your attention.” –Dr. Richard Moss

A father and son walking the shoreline during the dawn of morning passed an elderly man who was picking up starfish and flinging them back into the ocean. They asked the older gentleman what he was doing. He said, “These starfish will die if they are left stranded in the noonday sun.”

“But the beach goes on for miles,” said the young father, “and there are millions of starfish out here. How can your effort make any difference?”

The older man picked up another starfish, slung it back into the ocean and said, “It makes a difference to this one.”

We should never allow the criticism of others to hinder us from doing what can be done. Neither should we allow the enormity of our task to paralyze our efforts. We may not be able to do everything, but we can do something. We may not have the time, ability, or resources to help everybody, but we can help somebody. And perhaps this is what God has called you to do today. Don’t try to do everything for everyone, but you can do something for someone. You may not change the world, but you can change the world for that person.
