“…but the Spirit maketh intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered.”–Romans 8:26
In the seventeenth chapter of the book of John, Jesus prayed an intercessory prayer for His disciples. He was soon to die, resurrect, and ascend back to the Father; He would leave His followers behind with the Great Commission. He knew they needed to hear Him pray to be able to endure the coming events; therefore He prayed for their safety, their burdens, their joy, their labor, and their sanctification. What a moment that must have been for the disciples to hear their Lord and Master pray to the Father on their behalf.
But in the twentieth verse of the same chapter Jesus included another group in that same prayer. He said, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they may be one…” Jesus prayed for you, Jesus prayed for me.
The only way “others” could have believed was through the loyalty and commitment of those original twelve disciples. Each generation has the responsibility to tell the next generation of Christ so that they too can believe. If Jesus took the time and energy to offer up a prayer for the coming generation, shouldn’t we do the same?
