“If a good reputation is like gold, then having integrity is like owning the mine.” –John Maxwell
I like the story of the father and daughter who went to the circus together. When the little girl wanted some cotton-candy the vendor asked, “How can such a small girl eat all this cotton-candy by herself?” The little girl replied, “Mister, I’m a lot bigger on the inside than I look.”
“I’m a lot bigger on the inside” is a good mentality to maintain. Most people these days are caught up with image. We go to great lengths to impress others with external elements, but image will only take you so far in life. There is a vast difference between image and integrity. Image is what you appear to be, integrity is what you really are. Image is primarily external, integrity is internal. Image is how you look, integrity is how you live. It is safe to assert: your style and your lifestyle are two different entities.
I love how Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, “What you are speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.” Who you are when no one is looking is the real you. What you are on the inside is the true essence of your character and integrity. Live your life as Jonathan Edwards, “I am resolved to never do anything which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.” Now that my friend is someone who is big on the inside!
