“If religion dies out in the family, it cannot elsewhere be maintained” –Charles Hodge

How is it possible to implement the biblical principles of the home into reality? How do we turn the battleground of our homes into holy ground?  Paul had the answer in Ephesians 5:18-19, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

This is the secret.  As soon as Paul finished these verses he went on to explain the God-given assignments of the husband and wife.    Therefore, in context, the only way to fulfill the scriptural obligations of husband and wife is to be filled with the Spirit of God.

The only way to have the right kind of relationship with one another is to have the right kind of relationship with the Lord.  When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will have a hard time being filled with anger, lust, jealousy, division, and bitterness.

Building a lasting marriage and a good, stable home is hard work.  It will require sacrifice, time, and devotion.  However, God did not assign this task without help and assistance.  If we are going to be the kind of parents and spouses that honor God we will need His help.  Be filled with the Holy Spirit and as a result you will fill your home with the right kind of attitude, love, and affection.
